Eighth Week Of The Year

Thought I'd bring a little (albeit rudimentary) colorwork to my entry as I dish on the personal lives of two of the most prominent entrepreneurs in Atasiar: Cintra and Chito Chakraborty.

I love writing gossipy back stories, so decided to wholly indulge myself while fleshing out some of the important NPCs players might run into while staying in this Floating City. I always think it's important to know why people dislike one another in a fictional setting, as that helps bring about some rich (and often hilarious) roleplay. So this week, we talk about the living members of the Chakraborty family and why they do or do not get along.

Atasiar, as you can probably tell, is a solarpunk setting devoid of the gender restrictions that many are still grappling with today. Face and class, however, are concepts that are still pretty prevalent. High society in this instance is more scandalized by the appearance of unhappiness and discord amidst its members than by anyone's actual behavior. It's totally fine for someone to marry multiple spouses if they can support them. Acknowledging personal unhappiness with the (usually politically arranged) situation, on the other hand, is the kind of self-indulgence reserved for commoners.

Finally, I wanted to include a bit on the historically low birth rates of the setting. Whether due to increased radiation or the general hardship of life on the Risen Waters, fertility tends to be on the lower side. That said, a Floating City of limited resources can hardly be expected to support a constantly increasing population, so families with more than three children are taxed extra per head. This will lead to stuff I'm planning to explore in further installments.

Alright, gotta run: have a big Camp Elementa playtest planned for tonight. The Kickstarter launches tomorrow and I'm so nervous!
