First Week Of The Year!

Hello, friends! For the #Dungeon23 challenge this year, I thought I'd use this gridded notebook that's been languishing on my To-Use pile for the last little bit. Is it a choice of maximum irony? Perhaps!

Dungeon & Dragons' Dungeon Master's Guide Notebook

I knew I wanted to create a floating city that I've been thinking about since the summer, when I was helping playtest a Jeeyon Shim game on Twitter. Atasiar is a Malaysian-inspired city set in a post-apocalyptic world of risen waters. Since I'm basically writing this #City23 freeform, I decided to approach it as a traveler might, starting from the public docks.

Mostly (or at this point,) I've decided to eschew proper names for characters, to allow adventurers and their guides to make them up. This will likely mean that I'll have to write a table of names at some point, but in all honesty, names can be as familiar or exotic as you want, just as they are in Malaysia. Both the names Doreen and Edaureen are intrinsic to me, and don't change who I am. Lol, maybe that should be part of my entry on Names In Atasiar.

I spent way too much time looking up real-life docking conditions to write this page. I like boats and sailing quite a bit, but don't consider myself by any means an expert.

Two interesting things on this page. First, the illustration, in rough pencil sketch. One day I'm going to draw as beautifully as Zedeck Siew, but this week was clearly not that time. The second is the introduction of the Tumbaghar, one of the "monsters" that plague Atasiar.  These are based on the mythical Tambuakar, a sea serpent that allegedly plagues the Sabahan coast. You'll learn more about them next week.

And that's my first week of the #City23 project! See you in seven!
